What are Floating Shelves?Basically, they are any sort of wall shelf where the brackets used to support the shelf are hidden from view, creating the effect that the shelf is literally “floating” on the wall.
Pictured here is one of the simplest floating shelves to make. A common “L” bracket shelf support is used here. Instead of placing it below the shelf like normal, it is inverted and placed onto the top of the wall shelf. The books stacked on the top are used to hide the wall bracket, turning the simple shelf design into a floating shelf!
How to make a Floating ShelfThere are many ways to create a floating shelf effect in your own home using regular hardware and tools. Some are more advanced techniques than others. As depicted here, a ¼ inch hole is drilled into the studs in the wall along the shelf’s back. Corresponding holes are then drilled into the wall shelf (typically at least 1 ½ inches thick), then a metal rod is inserted into the wall at each stud. Finish up by gently tapping the shelf into the pins until it contact the wall at all spots along its back. Adorn your new floating wall shelf with pictures and decorations.
Use Floating Shelf Brackets and Hardware for cool effectsIn this nifty example of a floating shelf, we have a pyramid of literature with ball of twine at the top forming a makeshift “pyramid” of sorts. Now, the shelf is too deep for the pinning technique, and the lack wall coverage makes the inversed bracket hardware technique tough too. Can you figure out how they got this floating wall shelf to hang on? Can you figure out what configuration of shelving hardware they used to achieve it? Find out by reading on!
Use Floating Glass Shelves for invisible supportIf you guessed using a floating glass shelf you are correct! This style can also use a Plexiglass or store bought glass shelf with right angle clear bracket support. If the clear shelving is thin enough, it can even be tucked between some of the pages of the book, so that even upon close inspection it is completely invisible. The DIY setup shown here is a modern look that uses a combination of glass shelving, and stainless steel hardware.
